Lucky Skillen is visiting us from New York to guide us through a weekend of immersion in blues history and blues dancing.
In the workshop we will focus on the distinct posture, connection, and movement style used in different types of blues like Juke joint blues, Ballrooming and Microblues. Also we will play with the diversity of blues from the small details of micro blues to the fancy stuff, that you’ve gotta love like turns and spins, lifts and dips or putting solo movement into your dancing.

• You have a lot to put out there, but you also know that blues dancing is nor all about what you do, but the way that you do it.

ABOUT LUCKY SKILLEN
Lucky Skillen has been dancing for almost 17 years. He began in 1996 and started his teaching career in 1998. Since then he has taught and performed many styles of dance in Asia, Europe, and North America. He has also had the privilege of working with many celebrities in this time.
For the past 13 years his main focus has been on Blues Dance. He ran Americas first weekly blues venues "Lucky's Lindy and Blues" and has been on the cutting edge of the contemporary blues movement since. He was one of the first to bring the modern blues movement to Europe and has helped to develop many of the scenes and teachers across the world.
His philosophy on dance is know where it came from but make it your own. He creates a fun and playful atmosphere in his classes. He believes that play is learning and learning is fun.

Some of you may have attended a blues dancing workshop in Sydney in Feb 2012 with Paul Mandel (Boston, USA) teaching. The teacher that Paul learnt from is Shawn Hershey, who is coming to Sydney with his partner, Natalya Gomez (both from USA) and they have kindly agreed to teach 3 blues dancing workshops while they are here. Woohoo!
We had 20+ couples in each of the 3 workshops in 2012 which was a great response. There is obviously a lot of demand for learning blues dancing in Sydney as evidenced by the great attendance to Paul's workshops, the monthly Juke Joint and the blues room staged at the semi-regular Speakeasy sessions.
Each workshop will be 1.25 hours long with a 15 minute social dancing break between each to practice what you've just learnt. The workshops will be followed by 3 hours of social dancing.
When: Sun 24th Feb 2013
Where: Paddington RSL Club, 220-232 Oxford St, Paddington
3 Workshops (descriptions coming soon):
* 1-2:15pm - Fundamentals
* 2:30-3:45pm - Fundamentals/Intermediate
* 4pm-5:15pm - Intermediate+
These workshops are also geared towards Lindy Hop dancers with no blues dancing experience or anyone looking to further develop their blues dancing skills. Come to all 3 workshops to really get your blues dancing groove on!

Drift Creek Alt-Blues Recess in 2013 will be a new addition to the Recess series. It will take place in a three story tall A-frame with 117 beds in the middle of an old-growth forest off of Oregon's central coast. The property is located east of Lincoln City, Oregon, 16 miles down a forest road on an incredibly beautiful 12-acre property sitting at the base of a canyon and encircled by Drift Creek.
Drift Creek Alt-Blues Recess is already being called the "Cuddle-Puddle Recess," as we will be renting our own private lodge in the middle of a rain forest during the rainy season. We will spend three days cooking meals together in an industrial sized kitchen, hanging out by the fire, hiking the beautiful old-growth forests on the property, and dancing until sunrise in the lodge.

Both Johnny and Ksenia are professional dancers across many genres and they use this unique perspective to teach Swing dancing through a combination of technical exercises and dance imagery, so that students take away tools for dancing instead of steps. The workshop will be built upon a very deep connection with the partner and focus strongly on musicality. They will start with an authentic look at jazz steps, move into practicing connection with the partner and end with a set of figures which translate easily to the social floor.
These are two very professional teachers. Johnny has been developing curriculum for dance academies around Europe and is known for his light handed didactic. He is extremely active as a performer and choreographer and teaches because he loves it. Ksenia has won many titles for her beautiful authentic Jazz and blues dancing. Together they share the class as smoothly as they dance, not explaining too much, giving students plenty of space to acquire the material for themselves.

After Lukes amazing workshop in Malmö we immediately asked him cancel his tickets home and spend a weekend with the rapidly growing Danish Blues community. Luke gladly agreed to come and dance with us!
Luke will spend four hours dancing with us and we asked him specifically to "go out on a limb" and do something different and special with us. He's taken the challenge and will fly in to dance with us for three days and party with us for three nights.
"As a Dancer my goal is to make the person I’m dancing with want to dance with me again and again", Luke Weismann.
The first two hours of the workshop will be Lukes fantastic break down of moves which really would spark the creativity of even the best dancers. Then he'll go into musicality and finally he'll go out on a limb... Then we'll social dance a bit before we go party all night at Blues Club.
Levels (how good do I need to be?)
You'll fit right in if you've...
~Dance blues socially on a regular basis
~Have taken beginners workshops
~Have strong background in lindy, tango or salsa
... if you do not qualify already, you are required to join a 1.5 hour, taster class w. Luke on Friday the 24th. of May 18.00 and there's a wonderful party after that you can join in on (if you want to sign up for the taster class theis.egeberg@gmail.com). Hurry though, the taster will get filled up quickly.

On July 13th, blues dancers and their friends all over the world will come together to celebrate the power of dance and raise money for a great cause. House parties in many different cities happening simultaneously will offer relaxed and open environments for music, dancing, and sharing. The money raised will go toward Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) research for individuals living with mood and anxiety disorders.
The medical community is increasingly taking note of what social dancers have known for years: that dance reduces stress, boosts confidence, and promotes happiness. Julia Dillard, a dance therapist and blues social dancer in Colorado Springs, said about the power of DMT: "My clinical internship work was with acute inpatient psychiatric clients with dual diagnosis or mood/anxiety disorders... It was pretty common for clients to say things like 'I felt happy for the first time in months!' or 'I forgot I could enjoy my life without drugs' after dance therapy sessions." There have been some enormous strides in DMT research, but there is still a long way to go.
As a participant of Dance the Blues Away, you have the opportunity to get sponsors, attend your local DtBA party, and bring your friends (non-dancers included) to experience an all-nighter celebrating joy, happiness, and well-being through dance!

This July we will gather 20 minutes east of Grass Valley, California, where we have found a spectacular 325+ acre property of wooded mountainside in the foothills of the Sierras with panoramic views of the thousands of acres of wooded wilderness that surround us. It will be a first not only because we have deliberately chosen a venue site where we will be building and bringing in everything: our own dance venues, off grid kitchens, water storage facilities, power grid, cuddle chill zones, and thousands of square feet of mobile dance floors. But this year the event will also be a week long, running Monday to Monday (July 15th to 22nd). This already incredible setting accompanying the hallmark Recess boundary-pushing Alt, Fusion, and Blues DJs and live acts bumping until sunrise, mind-blowing skill-share workshops running in the daytimes, inspiring (and prized!) gender-f*ck and Alt competitions, and a radically inclusive ethic that can't help but inspire the community that we all deserve.

Balboa for Blues Dancers* brings together David Rehm, one of the world's top Balboa instructors, and Mike "the Girl" Legenthal, one of the world's top Blues instructors (who also loves Balboa), for a two-day series of workshops in Boston bridging the divide between these two scenes -- a chasm not so wide as you might think.
This workshop requires no prior knowledge of Balboa (or technically Blues for that matter), and will present both the basic figures and connection principles from the ground up, albeit at a faster pace geared for those with some dance experience and body awareness (as opposed to a 'beginner class'). Lindy Hoppers and existing Balboa dancers (even those who do not dance Blues) who are interested in revisiting core technique are also welcome and encouraged to participate.

WBWB is an intensive 7 hours Blues Weekend Workshop dance experience designed to enhance and improve your overall movement application. It will help you take the technical information and transform it into movement application. So if you want to geek out on Blues, improve your body awareness and see improvement in the way you move in just one weekend, this is the workshop for you.
Barry "The Man" Douglas:
It is hard to describe Barry. After all of his dancing experience from childhood onwards, his successes and teaching in over 24 countries some say he is the legend, others describes his as the ambassador of the Blues, others as just TheMan. He is really "The Man" of Blues and it would be a pity to miss this great dance legend while he is in Berlin.
Even before starting his formal training, at the age of 12, Barry was learning Blues standing on his grandfather's feet and listening to his grandpa's stories of the “Black Bottom”, the “Dirty Boogie” and the party days of Juke Joints and Speak Easies! His fascination with these stories and others about Blues dancing and its relationship to slavery is what inspired him to start his long and joyous journey in the world of professional dancing. Although he is certified in 16 different dances and has won multiple state and national championships, he still retains his street roots and his fascination with the Blues.
His smooth, authentic style and method of teaching will provide you with all the little technical details you need to make your dancing smoother and more fluid.

Vision Statement: At the Gender Bender Recess we are working to break down the conventional assumptions that negatively define our roles within the community based on our genders, our bodies, our sexual orientations, and our physical sex.
Curriculum Overview : The weekend will include the following three types of workshops.
Dance Workshops: Classes covering a variety of topics including: learning your non-dominant role, dancing switch, gender neutral dancing, role neutral dancing, and classes addressing how gender is expressed by or projected onto movement.
Activist Workshops: Interactive workshops and discussions addressing larger cultural and community issues such as gender assumptions, homophobia, sexism, consent, and the sexualization of dance.
Facilitated Discussions: Focused conversations designed to create constructive and safe spaces to share personal experiences, discuss issues we see in our community, and construct action plans to bring home after the event.
The curriculum will be scheduled so that participants can shape the focus of their weekend in whichever way they prefer. Come and spend an entire intensive weekend working on your dancing and your non-dominant role. Come and spend an intensive weekend talking about and workshopping some of the hardest hitting gender and oppression issues in the community. Or take a combination of activist and dance centered classes. One of our largest goals in this event is to create new bridges between dancer allies who are new to the activist scene and long time activists whose lens can help us create the community we all deserve.

Often referred to as "the funny one and the mysterious one," the duo have had to live life in limbo, wondering which one was which. Meanwhile, their teaching style remains easy to understand and they seek to both challenge and encourage their students to achieve new levels in their own dancing. Teaching internationally since 2001 Evin considers herself truly fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a variety of dance and cultural communities to help preserve and progress the dance. As a lifelong martial arts practitioner and sometimes teacher, Noah is happy to be teaching people not to try to destroy each other. Evin and Noah also adore working with their students back home where they run the premier Atlanta lindy hop instruction and performance company Down South Swing.

Drift Creek Alt-Blues Recess is already being called the "Cuddle-Puddle Recess" or the "Recess Family Gathering." We spend three days cooking meals together in an industrial sized kitchen, hanging out by the fire, hiking the beautiful old-growth forests on the property, and dancing until sunrise in the lodge.

Burlesque classes are free for the blues workshops participants (the full pass covers blues, burlesque, 1h surprise classes and parties). We offer burlesque pass for those who don't want to take part in the blues workshops.
All workshop participants (both those with full pass and burlesque pass) will have an opportunity to attend clasess on African-style dances!
We are planning to have two days of workshops (Saturday and Sunday).
Apart from the workshops we will also have three parties (Fiday, Saturday, Sunday).
On Saturday there will be the main party with amazingBartek Przytula Band!
